Diaries
DiariesProbably apposite to start with something about diaries. Reading about Bobbie Ann Mason’s In Country, it seems slightly glib for Krasteva (Yonka, not Kristeva, Julia) to posit that for Sam, reading her father’s diary is essentially “reading his unconscious”. Is the diary an established signifier of the unconscious? For me, the performativity of writing is a transformation of the unconscious to the conscious, a working out of ideas, an active conceptualisation which, down to the creation of a material text, is a kind of symbolic affirmation. But – at the risk of snobbery – is it only that for me because I can identify it as such?
