On the road
On the road“People are afraid to merge on highways in Los Angeles. This is the first thing I hear when I come back to the city. Blair picks me up from LAX and mutters this under her breath as her car drives up the onramp. She says, “People are afraid to merge on highways in Los Angeles.” Though that sentence shouldn’t bother me, it stays in my mind for an uncomfortably long time.”Bret Easton Ellis, Less Than ZeroHe took me driving with nowhere to go, with a faded pink cassette I made him years ago. Forced to steer, I screamed when the slightest touch sent us swerving across the road. I told him of Kyra chasing fate down a dark Northern lane, of Schumacher warming his wheels, of Kerouac’s Belief & Technique for Modern Prose. But as ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ pealed out, as we sped down abandoned freeways into the sun, I thought about the death I’d felt between my hands.
